Eddie Howe makes Newcastle United loan admission - 'Available to us'
Eddie Howe has spoken to the media about Newcastle's chances of making loan signings at the end of the transfer window.
Eddie Howe has discussed the possibility of Newcastle United dipping into the loan market before the end of the transfer window.
After a busy summer market in which Alexander Isak left for Liverpool and the likes of Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade, Malick Thiaw and more were signed, the Magpies have been quiet this January so far. Newcastle are yet to sign any players this month, while only young players and those surplus to requirements have left on loan.
That doesn’t mean Howe couldn’t do with a couple of extra bodies, however. Jacob Murphy, Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth are all sidelined through injury, while Bruno Guimaraes is also struggling with an ankle problem. The Magpies have been juggling Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup commitments alongside their Premier League schedule, in a gruelling run that is starting to take its toll on the squad.
Eddie Howe comments on Newcastle loan possibilities
There are just a few days remaining for Newcastle and their Premier League counterparts to secure new signings. At this late stage in the window, it could be difficult to pursue permanent signings, especially given how traditionally difficult the January market can be.
But what about loan signings? Could Newcastle make a couple of temporary additions to ease the pressure on tiring legs? "I think it's very difficult to use the loan market effectively for us. I think I've said many times, there's not too many clubs around the world desperate to help us, due to the fact that we're competitors,” said Howe.

However, he did add: "So I think it's a tough market for us to use effectively. But it's not to say that we wouldn't look at anything if it became available to us."
Who are Newcastle’s best recent loan signings?
Newcastle have used the loan market to great effect over the years. Most recently, Matt Targett was acquired from Aston Villa in January 2022 and played a key role in stabilising the Magpies’ defence as they avoided relegation and surged to 11th in the table. A year earlier, meanwhile, Joe Willock was signed on loan from Arsenal and notched eight goals in 14 appearances, ultimately earning a permanent move.
Looking further back, Newcastle also enjoyed success with strikers in the loan market, with Salomon Rondon scoring 11 goals and providing a key outlet on loan from West Brom in 2018/19, while Loic Remy bagged 14 goals in 26 Premier League appearances in 2013/14 on loan from QPR, firing the Magpies to 10th in the table.
