However, Erik Ten Hag started the 33-year-old – who was allowed out on loan by Eddie Howe after the club signed Nick Pope from Burnley – in tonight’s friendly against Cadiz in Spain.

"He did very well against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup," Ten Hag told MUTV. "We have to challenge all of the players, so today he plays and it's a good opportunity for him to get minutes in the legs to show what he's capable of."

Howe said the “door was still open” for Dubravka at Newcastle last month. The club’s head coach said: “The door’s still open, depending on what Martin wants (at the end of the season). We’ll take it from there.”
