Whether it was on a permanent transfer, loan deal or expiring contract, around 20 players exited St James’s Park ahead of Steve Bruce’s second season in charge.
The likes of Danny Rose, Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb returned to their parent clubs, while some of United’s upcoming talent secured loan moves in the Football League.
Here, we take a look at those who departed Tyneside – and how they are faring at their new clubs.

17. Rob Elliot
Elliot was released after nine years at St James’s Park, though waited until January this year to find a new club, which arrived in the form of Watford. The 34-year-old has appeared on the bench but is yet to be called upon. Photo: Ian MacNicol

18. Florian Lejeune
Lejeune is held in very high esteem by the Alaves supporters. The 29-year-old has missed just four games this season - which suggests his injury problems are behind him. That is welcomed news if he still indeed has a future on Tyneside. Photo: Juan Manuel Serrano Arce

19. Freddie Woodman
So good, they signed him twice. Woodman, of course, returned to the Liberty Stadium on loan and has picked up where he left off. He’s recorded the most clean sheets in the Championship so far - 20 from 44 appearances, two ahead of former Magpie favourite Tim Krul. Photo: Mike Hewitt

20. Valentino Lazaro
After barely getting a look in at Newcastle, Lazaro left Inter Milan on loan again - this time joining Borussia Monchengladbach, where he came up against Manchester City in the Champions League knockout stage. However, he’s more often been used as a substitute rather than a starter. Photo: CHRISTOF STACHE
