Whether it was on a permanent transfer, loan deal or expiring contract, around 20 players exited St James’s Park ahead of Steve Bruce’s second season in charge.
The likes of Danny Rose, Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb returned to their parent clubs, while some of United’s upcoming talent secured loan moves in the Football League.
Here, we take a look at those who departed Tyneside – and how they are faring at their new clubs.

13. Luke Charman
Charman was convinced to drop into National League North and join Darlington, where he helped the sixth-tier side reach the second round of the FA Cup. The striker remains hopeful of breaking back into the EFL. Photo: Michael Steele

14. Jack Young
The 20-year-old midfielder joined League Two side Tranmere Rovers in October but after five appearances, Young was sent back to Newcastle in January. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall

15. Nabil Bentaleb
United decided against activating a clause to turn Bentaleb’s loan into a permanent one and he subsequently returned to Schalke. The Algerian played at the start of the season before being banished to the reserves and just when he was recalled in February, he picked up a groin injury. Photo: Alexander Hassenstein

16. Yoshinori Muto
Muto seems to be enjoying his loan spell at La Liga’s bottom club Eibar after expressing an interest in staying permanently, if the opportunity arises. It has been far from a prolific spell for the Japanese international though, with just three goals in 26 appearances. Photo: David Ramos
