FA Cup draw: When Newcastle United, Sunderland & co will discover 4th Round opponents
Newcastle United latest news: This is when Newcastle United will discover their FA Cup Fourth Round opponents.
Newcastle United secured their place in the FA Cup Fourth Round with a victory over Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Magpies made very hard work of their Third Round tie, however, having been pushed all the way by a Cherries side that were just minutes away from winning the game themselves. Bournemouth looked like having secured the win at St James’ Park as they entered stoppage time leading their fellow Premier League opponents.
However, Anthony Gordon then converted a penalty, foreshadowing what was to come, to send the game to extra-time. It was then Newcastle United’s turn to wrongly think they had escaped with a win when Harvey Barnes netted in the 28th minute of extra-time to nudge the hosts ahead.
Marcus Tavernier, though, had other ideas as he poked the ball under Aaron Ramsdale to force a penalty shootout. 18 penalties later and Newcastle United were the ones to emerge victorious when Ramsdale tipped Bafode Diakite’s effort around the post to seal the 7-6 victory.
That win ensured that Newcastle United avoided being eliminated from the FA Cup at the first hurdle for the third time under Eddie Howe. The Magpies have made it to the Fourth Round in each of the previous two campaigns - but have been dumped out of the competition by Premier League opposition in each of those seasons.
Last year, they were defeated by Brighton at St James’ Park in the Fifth Round having made it to the last-eight a year prior, before falling at the hands of Manchester City.
Local rivals Sunderland also progressed through an all Premier League tie on Saturday as they also required penalties to defeat Everton. Aston Villa defeated Tottenham Hotspur to pile more misery onto Thomas Frank whilst Manchester City, the team Newcastle United welcome to St James’ Park on Tuesday night for the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final meeting, hit ten past Exeter City.
