The Switzerland international returned to full training last week having missed the previous 10 matches with a knee injury sustained in the 3-2 win over Southampton in early-February.

Schar, in an interview earlier this month, admitted he was aiming to play again before the end of the season but couldn’t say “if it is possible or not.”

It was feared Schar’s season was over when he was forced to undergo knee surgery.

Now, the 29-year-old looks increasingly likely to bolster Steve Bruce’s defence as he prepares to take to the field for Chris Hogg’s youngsters.

Bruce confirmed Schar had been back training with the first-team but expected the Liverpool game to come too soon for the defender.

That proved to be the case as Joe Willock’s injury-time equaliser saw the Magpies clinch a dramatic point.
