Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League champions are this week facing up to the prospect of another long spell without the services of Gomez, who went under the knife to fix a knee problem picked up while on international duty with England.

Gomez’s injury comes hot on the heels of long-term injuries for fellow defenders Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And, according to reports, Klopp could turn to out-of-contract former United man Janmaat.

The 31-year-old was released by recently relegated Watford in the summer, where he had been playing since leaving the Magpies in 2016 following relegation to the Championship.

Former Netherlands international full-back Janmaat has been training with one of his former sides – ADO Den Haag – in Holland this week as he looks to find a new club.
