The Dutch international, who scored 11 goals during his solitary year at St James’s Park, is set to depart Liverpool when his contract expires in the coming weeks.

Wijnaldum joined Jurgen Klopp’s Reds in 2016 for £25million – going on to lift the Premier League and Champions League title during his five years at Anfield.

The 30-year-old had been expected to join former national team manager Ronald Koeman at Barcelona, however PSG are said to have hijacked the deal after offering heavily increased wages.

Netherlands outlet De Telegraaf has detailed the player’s salary, claiming it is an offer Barca couldn’t match due to current financial constraints surrounding the La Liga giants.

Another factor in Wijnaldum’s decision is the opportunity to work under Mauricio Pochettino, a manager he almost signed for when he held talks with Tottenham Hotspur in the summer left Newcastle.
