Fresh Anthony Gordon Liverpool transfer claim made after Newcastle United talks & £68m double deal

Former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder has had his say on the transfer speculation surrounding Anthony Gordon.

Liverpool registered an interest in Gordon last month as Newcastle scrambled to sell players and raise funds to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules. The Magpies ultimately ended up raising the funds needed through the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively for a combined fee of £68million.

But the potential fallout of Liverpool’s approach has reportedly raised concerns back on Tyneside with The Telegraph reporting Gordon has had his ‘head turned’ by the interest while away at Euro 2024 with England. Newcastle plan on keeping hold of the 23-year-old beyond the summer as he remains a key part of Eddie Howe’s plans on Tyneside.

While former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder Didi Hamann believes the deal would be difficult for Arne Slot’s side to do this summer, he feels it would be a ‘brilliant signing’ for the club.

“I think that Anthony Gordon would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool,” Hnamann said. “Obviously, he had a hard time when he first came to Newcastle.

There was a few issues with the manager and with the fans, but he won them over, which is not an easy thing to do in Newcastle and the north east. “He's a brilliant player. I think he said somewhere, I'm not 100% on this, but I think he said his boyhood club was Liverpool and he was he was waxing lyrical about Steven Gerrard. “I think it would be a great signing, Whether or not they can do it, is a different matter, because I don’t think Newcastle would want to let him go.”

Liverpool are back in the Champions League after one season away and head into a new era under Slot having won eight major trophies under Jurgen Klopp’s management. Meanwhile, Newcastle are still searching for their first major trophy since 1969.

“I would say that there's more chance of winning major trophies at Liverpool,” Hamann added. “But the gap is probably not as big as it was five or so years ago, especially since the new money has come into the club.

“There's a lot happening at Newcastle at the moment, so, obviously you need to see with financial fair play and how that’s going to be implemented, where Newcastle can go in terms of challenging the biggest clubs in the league.”
