The 25-year-old, a big-money Rafa Benitez signing, has struggled on Tyneside and has spent large chunks of the last two seasons on loan in the Championship.

But Murphy, who won Wednesday's last player of the month award, has become a key player for Monk before the Championship season was put on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak.

"I have been working on aggression, getting my confidence back," said Murphy, a boyhood Newcastle fan, to the Yorkshire Post.

"Credit to Garry Monk, he has changed my mentality.

“He sends powerful messages, and they have sunk in. He gets me to see things from a different perspective. From him being here it has given me more of a hunger and fire in the belly. Every day I just want to work, work, work, I am starving to succeed.”
