And Newcastle United supporters were quick to react.

Maja’s brace represented his first top-flight goals since his arrival back in England at the end of the winter transfer window.

It was a big win for the London side in the relegation battle, and saw Scott Parker’s side close the gap between the bottom three and Newcastle United.

At the time of writing Fulham are just seven points adrift from Newcastle and have winnable games in Burnley at home and Sheffield United at home and Crystal Palace away.

And with the Magpies preparing to face Chelsea this evening, the pressure is on Bruce not to let that gap shrink further in the coming weeks, especially with Callum Wilson facing a couple of months out with injury.

Here's how Newcastle United fans reacted to Maja pulling Fulham a step closer to safety:

@AddingRandomWit: “I remember those heady days a month ago when we were one win away from our PL status being ‘almost assured’. We’ve won two since, and we still look worse for it looking at the league table!”

@khasoggiswidow: “Any club appointing Bruce deserves relegation.”

@TheMightySteve: “We wouldn’t be in this position if Bruce had been peddled or if he’d had the grace to walk when it became clear the job was too big for him.”

@CDixon_NUFC_83: “Fulham have been unlucky this season. They’ve lost less games than us just drawn too many. If they had managed 3 or 4 more goals over 3 games they’d be above us with this run incoming and be more representative of McClaren’s season. But we played well last few so no need to worry.”

@Barmy2Toon: “And we haven't got Wilson.”

@scurf9: “It’s shocking we have to talk about a relegation battle with these group of players.”

@drivingasap: “There’s always one team that slips into the bottom 3 alarmingly and it’s us or Crystal Palace.”

@rooney03: “But Mr Bruce told me that we weren't in a relegation battle.”

@waller6492: “We’ll be in the bottom 3 this time next month.”
