'I thought they were a disgrace, the Newcastle fans' - Watch as Robbie Savage slams fan chants aimed at him at Rochdale

Football pundit and ex professional player Robbie Savage.

Savage was working as a pundit at the FA Cup tie on Saturday for BT Sport, on co-commentary duties in the gantry, when a section of Newcastle fans chanted 'Robbie Savage is a ******', one of the chants aimed at the former midfielder.

The songs could be heard on air and it led to BT Sports apologising live on air.

Reflecting on the incident while working for 5Live, Savage told listeners: “I was trending on Twitter for the obscenities that the Newcastle fans were singing about me which I took in good faith and I was smiling about.

“But put yourself in that situation. If I was a Newcastle fan I'd be embarrassed. To sing the obscenity at a commentator when he's doing his job.”

He added: “You imagine in your workplace, you've got X amount of people turning around pointing camera phones in your face and waiting for you to respond and you're trying to do your job.

“I thought they were a disgrace, the Newcastle fans.

“Look, at the end of the day I was laughing. I had to laugh.

“But at the end of the game players were coming over to applaud the fans, a lot of Newcastle fans in the front row were giving gestures to their players to go away when all they were doing was coming over to acknowledge them.

"Listen, Newcastle fans are brilliant but try venting your frustration on the team."

Savage added: “It's pathetic. Newcastle fans who were there singing, it was absolutely pathetic.

“Alan Shearer said to me today - he put a laughing face emoji and said 'I was the one who started the chants'!”

The game ended 1-1 and there will be a third round replay sometime next week at St James’s Park to make it through to the fourth round.

Steve Bruce is keen to add a striker to his ranks, having already been linked with Glenn Murray, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batsuayi.

And, according to the Daily Mail, Palace are keen to reignite interest in the German-born frontman, having been outbid in 2018. United were also reportedly interested.

Tosun has scored10 goals in 18 months at Goodison.
