Wilson was ruled out for around eight weeks with a hamstring tear suffered in the Magpies’ last Premier League win – the 3-2 St James’ Park victory over fellow out of form top flight strugglers Southampton.

The 28-year-old former Bournemouth and Coventry City frontman, who turns 29 this week, has already been forced to sit out the Chelsea and Manchester United defeats, and despite some positive reaction to an Instagram training video, looks set to be absent for a little while longer yet.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Super 6 Podcast, with Laura Woods, Wilson revealed things are heading in the right direction with his recovery.

He said: “It is going well, thank you. I am taking my time, without rushing things and not putting myself at risk. I am also working very hard to make sure when I am back, I stay back.”
