Willems, a free agent after leaving Eintracht Frankfurt, is being considered as a potential replacement for Matt Ritchie, who could leave St James's Park this summer.

The 27-year-old – whose loan at Newcastle in the 2019/20 season was cut short by a knee injury – this week posted a farewell message to fans of the Bundesliga club, which had offered him a contract extension in January.

Willems didn’t accept that offer as he felt he was ready for a “new challenge” away from Frankfurt. Speaking to Voetbalzone, Willems said: “It was a tough decision. The club offered me a contract extension in January, and I didn’t accept it due to various factors and circumstances. One of the main reasons is that I feel that I’m ready for a new challenge.”

Meanwhile, United head coach Steve Bruce will speak to Ritchie about his future now the season is over.
