The striker posted a photograph of himself on Instagram of himself getting a haircut – despite barbers being closed under coronavirus lockdown rules.

Joelinton, signed from Hoffenheim for £40million in the summer of 2019, deleted the post, and a club spokesman said: “We are disappointed by the image shared by Joelinton. There are clear Covid-19 protocols in place, and the club continues to guide and educate its players on their responsibilities. The club will be taking appropriate action internally.”

Newcastle were hit by a Covid-19 outbreak late last year which led to the postponement of a fixture against Aston Villa. A number of players and staff were hit hard by coronavirus, and head coach Steve Bruce said: “In my opinion, we’ve not been the same since Covid struck.”

Earlier this month the club insisted that Allan Saint-Maximin, quarantining on his return from France, did not break any rules when he visited a supermarket.
