Leeds United 'favourites' to sign £10m Newcastle United star - but will have to sell first
The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United as Leeds United, Hull City and Ipswich Town are linked with a Magpies star.
Newcastle United are set for a major shakeup of their goalkeeping options during the summer transfer window.
Two departures have already been confirmed after veteran stopper John Ruddy and academy product Max Thompson both left Tyneside after their contracts came to an end. Mark Gillespie has extended his stay with his boyhood club by a further season and there has been one new arrival after the Magpies made France Under-21 international Ewen Jaouen their first summer signing.
Reports over the weekend have suggested Newcastle are hoping it will be third-time lucky in their attempts to lure Manchester City and England star James Trafford to St James Park and talks between the two clubs are believed to be ongoing. As it stands, Nick Pope is Eddie Howe’s first-choice keeper - but his future on Tyneside remains shrouded in doubt as he enters the final 12 months of his current deal this month. Leeds United are said to be long-term admirers of the former Burnley number one - but Hull City and Ipswich Town are also said to be keen on a move for Pope as they prepare for their return to the top flight this summer.
Former Everton and Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness has told Football Insider Leeds could beat the Premier League newcomers to Pope’s signature - but insisted the Whites will have to sell Brazilian stopper Lucas Perri before moving for the Magpies man.
He said: “Leeds are favourites [to sign Pope], but I think they're going to have to sell [Lucas] Perri, who hasn't been a great success as well. He might go something around £10m or £12m. If they can get that, it would be a good deal for them, and I think Pope would be the one to come in. There is interest for Ipswich, and that's close, but I do expect him to end up at Leeds. I think that would be a good one for Leeds to get him in there. To me, that would be a strengthening in the position.”
