‘Massive club’ - Defender makes brilliant Newcastle United admission amid transfer speculation
Murphy joined the Magpies in 2022 from League of Ireland outfit Galway United as the club looked to strengthen their youth ranks. After impressing in the youth system in the north east, Murphy was handed his Premier League debut by Eddie Howe as a late substitute during their 4-1 win over Chelsea in November.
Murphy, who impressed during pre-season ahead of the 2023/24 season, also featured during their win over Sheffield United in April and was a regular feature on the bench during last campaign. His progress on Tyneside has seen Murphy linked with a loan move away from the club this summer as a way to get him regular first-team football - with Howe previously admitting that a loan move for Murphy could be explored to help his development and expose him to the demands of regular senior football.

Hide AdSpeaking to the Irish Examiner, Murphy described Newcastle United as a ‘massive club’ and is hopeful of being able to progress further on Tyneside: “I didn’t realise the size of the club and how big it is until I actually went over,” Murphy said.
“It’s a one club city so everybody supports Newcastle. You can’t go out of your house without seeing a Newcastle shirt, someone who supports Newcastle, or talking about Newcastle. It’s a massive club and a huge fanbase. Hopefully I do well and keep progressing because I have been happy with the two years I have had there.”
