Matthias Jaissle teases late Newcastle United transfer activity with five-word statement

Newcastle United have until 11pm on Tuesday to finalise their summer transfer business.

Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle is “optimistic that things will happen” in the remaining four days of the summer transfer window.

Nico Gonzalez became the Magpies’ seventh summer signing after joining from Manchester City for £50million on Wednesday evening, but Jaissle still wants to see other areas of his squad strengthened before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline.

It’s understood United are interested in signing a versatile forward, with Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo near the top of their wish list. However, the Ligue 1 club are said to be demanding £60million for the Belgian. Stuttgart’s Bilal El Khannouss has also been flagged as a potential option.

But Jaissle insists Newcastle will be “smart” in their approach and won’t be panicked into any late deals.

“It's the first message in the morning to push, definitely,” Jaissle told journalists ahead of the Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night. “But the management, Ross as a sporting director, they're doing an amazing job, trying everything.

“We want to be smart, we don't want to act in panic. So I'm really optimistic that things will happen.”

Newcastle have undergone a major rebuild this summer following the departures of high-profile trio Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, as well as head coach Eddie Howe.

Raising £244million in player sales, the Magpies have spent around £220million on rebuilding the squad with players aged 24 or younger. That includes 18-year-old Sean Steur, 20-year-old Aladji Bamba, Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen, plus 24-year-old Lukas Hornicek, Amar Dedic and Gonzalez.
