According to a report in the Sun, United have beaten off competition from Rangers to land the 16-year-old Queens Park prospect.

United reportedly upped their initial offer of £35,000 for the player – and the Scotland youth international will put pen to paper next month, when the winter transfer window opens.

The report states: “Thomson has been chased by several sides in recent months but the chance to go to Newcastle and into their reserve side has swung it.

“He has been likened to John Fleck, the new Scotland cap at Sheffield United, and will agree personal terms before joining officially when the window opens next month.”

Rangers and Celtic were reportedly scouting the Scotland under-17 international, who has made nine first-team appearances for the Scottish League Two side this campaign.
