With Joelinton finding the net just once in 13 appearances, the Magpies are arguably crying out for a more potent goal threat, as they continue lack the clinical edge needed to succeed in the top tier.

As scoring records go this seaon, Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos 20 in 28 matches is not too shabby, and Sky Bet have made Newcastle 6/1 favourites to land the 23-year-old in January.

Aston Villa and Everton are also in the mix, both sitting at 9/1, while the likes of Atletico Madrid, Crystal Palace, and Leeds United are also among the runners and riders.

Of course, at odds of 6/1, it's still a long way from a dead cert, but it is still at least an encouraging sign for Newcastle’s chances of landing the player, given the amount of interest and buzz the Colombia international has been generating of late.

The Magpies were heavily linked with a move for Morelos last summer, and could potentially look to reignite their interest in the summer transfer window. However, with Rangers flying in both the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League, it seems unlikely that he'd look to leave Glasgow midway through the current campaign.

Earlier in the month, his former manager at Independiente Medellín, Dario Silva, publicly urged the striker to remain with Rangers, given his potential to star for the Scottish giants for years to come.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are hard at work preparing for this weekend's clash against Manchester City. The Magpies almost derailed Pep Guardiola's side's title bid when they met last January, claiming a famous 2-1 win at St. James' Park.
