'Opportunities' - Newcastle United coach opens up on Matthias Jaissle relationship

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has shown a keen interest in the Magpies academy setup this season.

Newcastle United Under-21s lead coach Robbie Stockdale has given an insight into his relationship with Matthias Jaissle after several Magpies youngsters were given opportunities to impress within the first-team setup.

The former RB Salzburg and Al Ahli head coach handed invaluable senior experience to the likes of Henry Johnson, Leo Shahar and Rory Finneran throughout pre-season and academy prospects have been a consistent presence within first-team training during the first two months of the Premier League season.

A high point for the youth ranks was reached when Mason Miley, Michael Mills, Vakhtang Salia, Miodrag Pivas and Kyran Thompson were all named as substitutes for a 2-1 home win against Hull City prior to the international break in a fixture that also saw academy product Lewis Miley selected in Jaissle’s starting eleven.

The bonds between the first-team and Stockdale’s ranks appear to be strong with members of Jaissle’s senior coaching staff present at Under-21s fixtures and conversations over the development and progress of the Magpies youngsters are taking place on a regular basis.

Stockdale believes the experience several of his players have gained with the first-team in training and on matchday has reflected well on academy staff and insisted Jaissle’s openness to putting his trust in young players shows there is genuine quality within the youth ranks.

When asked how his relationship with Jaissle had developed, he told The Gazette: “Very well. It’s as good as what I can remember. They can see the players going up have got quality. I think on the back of that they trust them and know whenever they are called upon they can do a job. That’s really ticking the box for all of the work the academy coaches do under me, I just get the final bit. But certainly we would expect all of the players that go up there can put on a really good show. The proof is in the pudding. They keep going up and getting opportunities.”

The Magpies Under-21s will get a chance to impress at St James Park after their Tyne-Wear derby clash with Sunderland was moved to Gallowgate. The fixture will take place on Monday, October 26 with a 7pm kick-off.
