Matthias Jaissle vows to end Eddie Howe 'trauma' narrative Newcastle United players warned him about

Matthias Jaissle admitted he felt the nervousness of St James’ Park during the second half of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Hull City.

Matthias Jaissle wants to put the ‘trauma’ experienced in Eddie Howe’s final season to bed at Newcastle United.

The Magpies were able to hold out for three points against Hull City on Saturday at St James’ Park despite the visitors pushing hard for an equaliser in the closing stages.

Last season under Eddie Howe, Newcastle dropped a Premier League record number of points from winning positions (27) and picked up the fewest points from losing positions (3) while also conceding many late goals. This season, Jaissle is looking to change that narrative at Newcastle and the early signs are somewhat positive.

Newcastle only dropped two points from winning positions so far this season and have come from behind to get a result against both West Bromwich Albion and AFC Bournemouth.

And Jaissle revealed that his players admitted that Saturday’s game against Hull may have ended differently in the past.

When asked about the tension in the ground during the second half at St James’ Park, Jaissle said: “Yeah, I've felt that also, but that's maybe something that stuck, maybe somehow a trauma from the past, so I hope we can change that mindset.

“The players, they told me already these games would have ended in a different result [in the past], so we try to change this narrative, that belief also, and hopefully you can feel that in the next weeks and months, but also that if something goes wrong, that we are in a positive way, energised and supporting.

“I think this is especially really important with a young squad.”
