Newcastle United star ruled out of seven matches after visiting specialist in London

Newcastle United captain Dan Burn issues update on his ankle injury.

Newcastle United captain Dan Burn expects to be back in action after the upcoming international break.

The 34-year-old rolled his ankle in training in the days leading up to the club’s Premier League opening day draw at home to Liverpool on Sunday, attending the game on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Burn was sent to London to see a specialist and is set to be sidelined for around seven weeks, with the hope he can return for the Monday night trip to Coventry City on October 12.

Having already missed two Newcastle games, Burn will sit out a further five, as well as England’s four UEFA Nations League matches across late September and early October.

Providing an update in the club’s matchday programme ahead of the Carabao Cup second round tie against West Bromwich Albion, Burn said: “I missed the game due to an injury I picked up on training on Thursday. I rolled my ankle and went down to London to see a specialist on Friday.

“I was in agony, trying to walk through Newcastle city centre without limping, and then I had people asking me on the train what I was going down for, so I was having to make up all sorts of excuses!

“We did well to keep the injury under wraps until a few hours before kick-off. It’s my not first injury and I’m sure it won’t be my last but hopefully I won’t be out for too long - I expect to be back after the international break.”
