Contract talks with midfielders Sean and Matty Longstaff stalled late last year.

A new deal for Sean, 22, has been on the agenda at the club since late last season, while Matty, linked with Inter and AC Milan, is now free to talk to overseas clubs as his Newcastle contract expires in the summer.

Bruce, United’s head coach, says the club will now “concentrate” on securing the brothers – who both came through the ranks at the club – on new deals.

Speaking last month, head coach Steve Bruce said: “Once we get January done, we’ll concentrate on those. Particularly young Matty, who keeps scoring goals, and is doing as well as his brother at the moment.”

Fans, however, are concerned at a lack of progress in the talks, especially with Matty’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

The 19-year-old was asked about his contractual situation in October after, memorably, making a goalscoring Premier League debut against Manchester United, the club which was prepared to pay £35million for his elder brother, under contract until 2022, last summer.

Matty said: “Obviously, I want to stay at Newcastle. But the biggest thing for me is just to carry on playing well, and that will take care of itself.”

There has been no progress in talks since late last year, and Newcastle must now work quickly to resolve the situation.
