Newcastle United's five-year net spend compared to Premier League rivals ahead of transfer deadline day
Newcastle United have become one of the Premier League's biggest spenders over the past five years.
Newcastle United spent big in the summer, so it’s little surprise to see that it’s been a quiet January transfer window.
Even with the British record sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool, the Magpies still operated at a loss of €102.85m, parting with huge sums to bring the likes of Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga and more to St. James’ Park. That takes Newcastle’s net spend over the last five years in the Saudi era to a whopping €492.44m. It’s yielded a major trophy and two Champions League qualifications so far, so any supporter would say it has been worth it. But where does it rank among the rest of the Premier League?
Premier League clubs ranked by five-year net spend
- Man Utd - €782.92m
- Arsenal - €771.41m
- Chelsea - €757.11m
- Tottenham - €665.98m
- Newcastle - €492.44m
- Man City - €491.33m
- Liverpool - €487.85m
- West Ham - €406.05m
- Nottingham Forest - €376.58m
- Crystal Palace - €183.91m
- Sunderland - €141.09m
- Fulham - €136.72m
- Burnley - €123.28m
- Bournemouth - €119.64m
- Brentford - €118.79m
- Aston Villa - €92.52m
- Leeds United - €85.23m
- Wolves - €50.94m
- Everton - €13.87m
- Brighton - +€610k
Only four clubs have spent more than Newcastle United over the last five years. It’s no surprise to see Manchester United topping the list at €782.92m, but that has only yielded an FA Cup and EFL Cup during that time. The Red Devils are followed by current Premier League leaders Arsenal (€771.41m), Chelsea (€757.11m) and Tottenham Hotspur (€665.98). The latter’s net spend is stunning considering they finished 17th last season and currently sit 14th, winless in five league games.

With two EFL Cup finals - winning the second one last season to end a 56-year trophy drought - and two Champions League qualifications, nobody can say Newcastle’s level of spending hasn’t paid off yet. Arch-rivals Sunderland are also quite high up the list in 11th, with a €141.09m net spend. The Black Cats made a €7.95m profit in 2024/25, but their five-year spend his fuelled by the €140.90m they parted with in the summer following their return to the Premier League - signing the likes of Habib Diarra, Granit Xhaka, Nordi Mukiele and Robin Roefs.
One of the most eye-catching aspects of the Premier League five-year net spend table is the fact that Brighton are the only side to make a profit. The Seagulls have consistently made big sales with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo, Joao Pedro and Marc Cucurella, replacing them at a fraction of the price.
