Former Newcastle United duo take up surprise Pakistan roles in strange career move

Titus Bramble has joined Nobby Solano to become the assistant coach of the Pakistan national team.

Newcastle United cult hero Solano was appointed manager last year after a brief spell in charge of the under-23s setup. An eventful post-playing career has seen the 51-year-old take up roles in Canada, Sweden and his native Peru.

Solano had a three-month stint at North East outfit Blyth Spartans in 2024. He has now recruited a former Newcastle teammate as his understudy at Pakistan.

Signed in 2002 by Sir Bobby Robson, Bramble arrived as an England under-21 international with high potential. However, his time at St James’ Park was ultimately framed by inconsistencies and comical errors.

The ex-defender joined Wigan Athletic in 2007 before a controversial move to Sunderland three years later. Bramble was famously sent off for the Black Cats as Newcastle secured a historic 5-1 derby win in October 2010.

In an Instagram post, the Pakistan national team confirmed Bramble’s appointment as assistant coach. The announcement read: “From Premier League battles to the Pakistan touchline.

“Former Premier League defender Titus Bramble, who made over 200 Premier League appearances during an accomplished playing career, begins a new chapter with the Pakistan Men’s Senior National Team as Assistant Coach.

“Bringing valuable experience from the highest level of English football, Bramble joins the national setup at a crucial time as Pakistan looks ahead to the FIFA ASEAN Cup and the challenges that lie ahead. A new chapter. A new vision. One team. One dream. Welcome to Pakistan, Coach Titus Bramble!”
