'I know' - Anthony Elanga reveals why he has struggled at Newcastle United after £55m transfer

Anthony Elanga was the best of a bad bunch for Newcastle United in the 4-1 defeat to Bristol City.

Anthony Elanga has declared that he “feels sharp and strong” and is looking forward to making an impact at Newcastle United.

An underwhelming debut season resulted in the Swede failing to score a Premier League goal following his £55million move from Nottingham Forest. Elanga arrived as one of the marquee signings last summer but failed to replicate his Tricky Trees form.

Toon fans were given hope at the World Cup as the 24-year-old starred for Sweden - scoring against the Netherlands and Japan. Newcastle will be wanting Elanga to showcase his best displays in black-and-white stripes this season.

Anthony Elanga honesty

Speaking to the club website, Elanga reflected on a poor maiden season at St James’ Park. He said: “I've reflected a lot and I'm a different player now, I'm a different person from last year, from yesterday. I always try to forget about the past, but learn from it, and move forward for what's ahead.

“There are exciting times ahead. I've just got to focus on the things that I can control. I know last season wasn't the way I wanted it to go, or what I had planned in my head. But I know the type of player I am.

“I know what I'm capable of doing, so it's all about focusing on the now, staying present for the present and moving forward with confidence and precision. It's the precision before the pounce. I'm ready for this season to start."

‘Best I’ve felt’ - Anthony Elanga

Elanga - the standout performer for the Magpies in the 4-1 defeat at Bristol City - also opened up about his mindset ahead of the new campaign. He added: "For me, physically, I feel the best I've ever felt. I just feel ready to go.

“I've come back for the new season and it doesn't feel like I've been away. I'm ready to play as soon as possible. I feel sharp, I feel good, I feel quick, strong. I just want to go out there and show it. I've grown a lot as a player, as a person. I've learned a lot from what I did last season.”
