Newcastle United confirm crest change details for 2027-28 season - first time in 37 years

Newcastle United are set to revamp their existing crest - which is currently the oldest in the Premier League.

Newcastle United will ask supporters to vote for the club’s new crest ahead of a definitive change in 2027-28.

The Magpies currently use the oldest badge in the Premier League, with the iconic seahorses, castle and black-and-white shield remaining unaltered since 1988. Last summer, the club announced plans to unveil a new crest before delaying the project by a year.

Our sister title, NewcastleWorld, leaked a controversial proposal that was negatively received by fans. The club have now confirmed fresh steps to ensure fans shape the final design.

In a message to supporters, Newcastle reiterated that the current crest is no longer fit for the modern era. However, following consultation and feedback received at a series of fan events, the Magpies will update the existing badge rather than replace it entirely.

Research found that 84 per cent of supporters favour a reboot instead of an overhaul. Newcastle have also promised to retain key elements - like the seahorses, castle and shield - and ruled out a generic circular design that is commonplace in modern football.

A formal ballot on the shortlisted designs will open next month, with eligible fans invited to choose their preferred crest. Season ticket holders, Mags members and those who attended at least two women’s matches in 2025-26 can take part.

The club will then confirm the winning design ahead of its planned introduction for the 2026-27 campaign. Further information is expected across the official club channels ahead of the poll.
