‘I’ll never forget’ - Newcastle United star issues 98-word statement after career heartbreak

Dan Burn made three appearances for England on their way to securing a best World Cup campaign since 1966.

Dan Burn insisted he is “proud” after helping England to their best World Cup campaign since 1966.

A thrilling 6-4 win over France in Saturday’s third-place play-off rounded off a roller-coaster tournament for the Three Lions. Inevitably, a feeling of “what might have been” remains after the semi-final loss to Argentina.

Thomas Tuchel has been lambasted by the media and a large section of England fans for his tactics last Wednesday. With his side ahead of 55 minutes, the German opted for a safety-first approach - which backfired.

Despite this, he can still boast leading England to their best World Cup on foreign soil. Notable highlights include the famous victory in Mexico and comeback wins over DR Congo and Norway.

‘I’ll never forget’ - Dan Burn

Posting on social media, Newcastle United defender Burn reflected on his maiden tournament for the national team. The 34-year-old will now be given an extended break before reuniting with his Toon teammates.

“Sunday was the one we all wanted to play in but the lads did a great job ending the tournament on that note,” Burn wrote on Instagram. “Can’t describe how proud I am to have been part of this group, taking us to the best World Cup finish since 1966.

“That’ll be something I’ll never forget. Your support has been immense ever since my first call up and it’s been unreal to see the love over here and at home from the whole country. Keep supporting, there’ll be even better times ahead for England.”

Thomas Tuchel comes out fighting

A spicy pre-match press conference saw an emotional Tuchel snap back at reporters for questioning his decisions. After beating France in the third-place play-off, the German has called for perspective.

“The press conference yesterday felt as if we went out in the group stage without a win, to be very honest,” Tuchel said. “And 24 hours later we have the biggest success in 60 years. My decisions, my interventions, my substitutions, the change of structure did not have the effect that I wanted to so I have to live with this.

“This is very painful for me because I did it in good faith and I did it with a clear plan and a clear idea behind it. It didn’t work out.”
