First Newcastle United player goes public on Eddie Howe with 128-word message
Jacob Murphy has discussed the recent managerial change at Newcastle United.
Jacob Murphy has hailed Eddie Howe for “transforming” his Newcastle United career.
Previously a bit-part player on Tyneside, the 31-year-old appeared destined for the St James’ Park exit following the Saudi-backed takeover. Murphy had two loan spells and, until that point, was used as a utility man by Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce.
Howe developed Murphy into a key performer at right-wing as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League twice and won the Carabao Cup. An impressive 23 goal contributions in 2024-25 were the highlight of his Newcastle journey.

Jacob Murphy thanks Eddie Howe
Speaking to the club’s matchday programme, Murphy paid tribute to Howe - who resigned as manager last month - for resurrecting his stuttering career. He said: “He took us to places we hadn’t touched in decades. He brought a new foundation and built upon that. With that came the hope and the belief, and really transformed what was an underwhelming club into the early stages of a powerhouse.
“We’ll forever be grateful for how we changed the fortunes at Newcastle. The fan base started to believe again. It was a massive culture shift - a group of 25 lads who were dying to be coached, wanted to better their career… and he was the bedrock to that.
“He gave us that platform to really showcase our talent, our attributes, but with a gilded structure, which helped the squad. He transformed my career, but transformed the career of pretty much everybody who played under him.”
‘Fresh ideas’ - Jacob Murphy
Murphy has also been left impressed by Matthias Jaissle’s fresh approach since taking charge. He added: “It’s been eventful. There’s probably been more turbulence than any of us would have liked over the last couple of seasons, but it's now about regaining stability and building towards a new future - and a better future.
“I’ve been really impressed with his (Jaissle’s) delivery and instructions. It’s clear, there’s no grey areas. Some things are already part of the DNA , so that almost gives us a headstart in being able to implement some of his ideas. But fresh and new ideas, it’s going to help everyone moving forward.”
