Eddie Howe learns date he could become Man United manager - Newcastle United watch on for £3m payout
Eddie Howe remains the favourite to succeed Michael Carrick should Manchester United pull the trigger.
Manchester United will reportedly persist with under-fire boss Michael Carrick until the upcoming international break.
As it stands, Eddie Howe remains the odds-on favourite to take charge at Old Trafford. Despite calling for a break when leaving Newcastle United just three months ago, he is Red Devils sporting director Jason Wilcox’s first-choice candidate.
Howe holds strong Premier League credentials and has proven that he can develop players on the training pitch. He has moved down south with his family since leaving the Magpies and is preferring not to be distracted by the Man United talk.

Many felt as though Carrick’s position became untenable after losing 3-0 at home to Bournemouth last week. Just days earlier, Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the team’s tactics.
The Red Devils are suffering their worst Premier League start ever, with just seven points from a possible 27 available. Carrick’s side only sit above the relegation zone on goal difference.
However, the Old Trafford board offered Carrick a stay of execution. He led the side to a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday and will remain as manager against Roma and Aston Villa this week.
Man United stance on Michael Carrick and Eddie Howe
Should results fail to improve, it is highly likely that Man United will pull the trigger during the international break. That means Howe could be just over a week from being named as Red Devils manager.
Newcastle would be entitled to around £3million in compensation if he joins another club. This was part of the agreement when the 48-year-old left the Magpies in July.
It should be noted that support for Howe is not unanimous within the Old Trafford boardroom. A lack of alignment is one of the key reasons why Carrick remains as the head coach.
Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte appear to be more popular choices with the club’s supporters. The bookies price Howe as the 4/6 front-runner should Carrick fail to survive the next round of fixtures.
