‘Better for me’ - Nick Woltemade sends Eddie Howe message on Newcastle United tactics
Nick Woltemade was used in several different roles for Newcastle United last season.
Nick Woltemade has revealed he operates better in a two-man attack or behind a leading striker.
The German became a conundrum for Newcastle United last season. Toon chiefs stumped up a club-record £64million to sign Woltemade, who enjoyed a flying start with four Premier League goals in five games.
However, his form and confidence soon nosedived as the 6ft 6in forward divided opinion on Tyneside. Eddie Howe switched Woltemade into midfield during Bruno Guimaraes’ absence - a move which failed to work out.

‘Two-striker system’ - Nick Woltemade
Woltemade has opened up about a disappointing World Cup campaign to German icon Thomas Muller. He played just 32 minutes - and missed a decisive spot-kick - as Julian Nagelsmann’s men crashed out to Paraguay on penalties.
His comments on where he plays best should intrigue Newcastle ahead of the new campaign. Woltemade said: "Preferably in a two-striker system or behind the striker. It's better for me to play with a lot of freedom and when I have someone around me."
Nick Woltemade reflects
Germany moved quickly to appoint Jurgen Klopp as manager following another disastrous tournament. Woltemade gave an honest assessment on where the team is at while opening up about his penalty blunder.
“Many players will be the same,” he added. “If you look at the age of our players, it is still an exciting team. Now we get a new coach, let's see what will happen. It’s nice that we can go again in a few months.
"It (missing the penalty) didn't feel good. I asked myself where I shot my last penalty kicks and what the goalkeeper would expect. I thought I was the clever one when I went to the right.
"I'm still glad I took the penalty in hindsight. That goes with my way, my character, that I take the ball, although the tournament hadn't gone quite optimally for me by then."
