Forget Eddie Howe, this is the biggest issue facing Newcastle United - supporters deserve clarity

St James’ Park is understood to be a key focus at Matfen Hall - the situation has dragged on and Newcastle United supporters deserve answers.

For all of the furore over last year’s summer transfer window and online in-fighting regarding the manager, one Newcastle United issue towers above the rest.

Without clarity on St James’ Park’s future, the club remains in perpetual limbo. Not our words - but those of Eddie Howe - who hammered the point home last year.

"Fundamentally, looking at the club with a broader view, the training ground, the stadium, that part of the club is in limbo at the moment," he said. "In terms of which direction the club is going to take, that would be a big step forward to get clarity on that and to take everything into the future in a really positive way.

"It would have a game-changing effect on everything. If we can move everything forward in terms of facilities - not that I believe facilities are the be-all and end-all - but they are a great way of setting standards higher and showing your ambition in a really clear and strong way."

A game-changing effect indeed. Take Tottenham Hotspur, for example, a club very much on an even keel to Newcastle before Mike Ashley’s ruinous 14-year reign.

Spurs are in dire straits on the pitch but raked in £565.3 million last year. Their state-of-the-art stadium contributed towards £277.1 million in commercial revenue.

For context, Newcastle’s entire operation banked £335million. United’s commercial income rose by 44 per cent - and for that Toon chiefs deserve credit - but they remain in a different post code to the Premier League elite.

If Tottenham survive relegation, they can bankroll a push up the table next season. Manchester United proved the point. The Red Devils finished 15th a year ago, only to spend £200million on a new frontline to launch a Champions League bid. Newcastle do not have luxury.

Supporters deserve answers. Brad Miller, the Chief Operating Officer and head honcho behind the stadium decision, promised a decision in “early 2025”. It is now May 2026.

St James’ Park has been a bastion of Geordie heritage for 146 years. Given its unique location, the stadium truly is the heartbeat of the city.

This is not to lecture any personal feelings on the revamp-versus-rebuild debate. We have passed that point now. Transparency - and a clear vision - is needed to give the Saudi-backed project an essential shot in the arm.

Doubts about the Public Investment Fund’s commitment are growing. There is a simple way to answer them: set St James’ Park’s future in stone.
