'Tough' - Newcastle United manager with highest win % ever gives advice to Matthias Jaissle

Matthias Jaissle will lead Newcastle United into their next chapter following Eddie Howe’s resignation.

Chris Hughton has urged Matthias Jaissle to demand more incomings at Newcastle United.

And in paying tribute to Eddie Howe, he believes the recently departed Toon boss left the club as a legend. A bombshell announcement last Thursday resulted in Howe stepping down after four-and-a-half years in the hot seat.

Jaissle - previously at Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli - is being drafted in as his successor. The German arrived with a point to prove in the Premier League, with Newcastle also needing inspiration after losing several top players.

Chris Hughton advice to Matthias Jaissle

Hughton - whose stint as permanent manager boasts the best win percentage (59.38) in Newcastle history - advised Jaissle to ask for help from upstairs. He told talkSPORT: “It's not really about advice, but certainly what he will bring, he's young, he'll walk through the door with a lot of enthusiasm.

“Probably the only thing is to put that pressure on the club to try and bring in the players that are needed sooner rather than later, because there's nothing that adds more to a club, to a support, when they see new players coming through the door.

“It's an important one for the coach in what he sees in that dressing room. But he'll come in with lots of enthusiasm, I'm quite sure. It's a tough job, and it's a tough job at this moment because Eddie Howe did a fabulous job. What he managed to do in his time was to bring in quality players.

“Unfortunately, some of these quality players have left. So it's a tough act to follow. It's always a difficult start, it's always a difficult division and I think he will have to start well just to appease the supporters. The supporters will see so many of these good players going out the door.

“That also doesn't mean that there might be some other players that might want to leave. So I think he's got a fair bit of work there but he'll come in with bundles of enthusiasm and he's got to show that enthusiasm to this group of players that he's got.”

‘A club legend’ - Chris Hughton

On Howe’s departure, Hughton added: “I'm saddened, I must admit. I know Eddie. He's a superb manager and has done a great job there. Was it a surprise? No, not a mega surprise. Maybe the timing was a surprise because I know there was a lot of talk towards the end of last season.

“But it's obviously the fact that they've brought in somebody straight away. It obviously wasn't a surprise to the people in the know at Newcastle. But I'm saddened by it because I think he's a top manager. He's done a tremendous job there, bringing them their first trophy in some 50-odd years.

“He’s taken to the Newcastle supporters very, very much so. I think they see him as one of their own and he'll be a hard act to follow. He absolutely goes down as a club legend.”
