‘Things can change’ - Newcastle United drop big Nick Woltemade transfer hint as £64m debate continues

Nick Woltemade is linked with a potential loan move to Borussia Dortmund in the final few days of the window.

Matthias Jaissle has confirmed he “expects” Nick Woltemade to stay but did cast doubt over his Newcastle United future.

Speculation has ramped up in recent days about whether the Magpies could cut ties on their £64million investment. A permanent transfer is unlikely due to Woltemade’s remaining book value but Borussia Dortmund are linked with a potential loan move.

Jaissle handed Woltemade the opportunity to impress against West Bromwich Albion last night. However, despite playing the full 90 minutes, the 24-year-old had little impact up front.

‘Things can change’ - Matthias Jaissle

Jaissle gave an unconvincing answer when asked if Woltemade would remain at St James’ Park after the transfer deadline on Tuesday. He told reporters: “For all the players, if you want to go now through all the squad, I expect him to stay.

“As we're talking today, but you know as well, football is quite complex. Things can change from one day to the other.”

Matthias Jaissle backs Nick Woltemade

While he offered little in front of goal, Jaissle backed his compatriot for showing spirit and fight against West Bromwich Albion. He added: “I'm not a psychologist, I don't know. But for us it's clear that we always support him. Like I said already beforehand, he was really committed.

“If you see him in training, you will see that even more. A really hard worker, so we're pleased. It's just a matter of time that he scores. He was fighting. (It is) not easy as a single striker. He had a specific job today, also out of possession.

“He really tried his best, he put all the effort on the pitch. Unfortunately, he didn't score. I would have wished it for him, because he shows a great commitment. Not only in training, also today in the match.”
