Newcastle United player ratings: Nightmare 2/10 and several 4/10s in disaster at Bristol City
A recap of our post-match player ratings after Newcastle United were thrashed 4-1 by Bristol City.
Bristol City inflicted Newcastle United their first defeat of pre-season with a humbling 4-1 win at Ashton Gate.
Goals from Sam Greenwood and Lorent Tolaj gave the hosts a deserved scoreline at the break. Max Bird fired the Robins into a three-goal lead shortly after half-time as the 3,800-strong away end feared a cricket score.
Ultimately, Harvey Barnes netted a consolation before a comical Sven Botman own goal completed the rout. Here are your Newcastle United player ratings from a pre-season fixture to forget.
Ewen Jaouen - 5
Good save to deny Sam Greenwood early on. Had little chance with the former Sunderland man’s free-kick. However, the second goal was certainly saveable. Subbed for Nick Pope at half-time.
Jacob Murphy - 4
Once again captained the side, this time in the unfamiliar role of right-back. Came close with a first-half volley. Not sure what he was doing for the third goal.
Fabian Schar - N/A
Hooked early on with what looked like a groin problem. A blow given he has recently returned from a lengthy injury.
Sven Botman - 2
A nightmare return for the Dutchman. Played a role in three goals - and even scored Bristol City’s fourth for them.
Lewis Hall - 5
Did not see as much of the ball as usual. Cannot blame him for any of the goals.
Sean Steur - 5
Several classy touches and passes in the first half. Was absent in the second, but Steur will benefit from this game. Newcastle should not be looking towards an 18-year-old new arrival for inspiration.
Jacob Ramsey - 5
Lost the midfield battle against Championship opposition. Was never brave enough in possession. The late assist for Barnes boosted him up half a mark.
Joe Willock - 4
Lacks the creativity that this team needs. Very passive. There are rumours that he could be sold to Besiktas.
Anthony Elanga - 6
Carried his World Cup confidence into the opening 20 minutes. Failed to replicate the same energy. Probably Newcastle’s best player - although that does not say much.
Harvey Barnes - 5
Tried to provide an outlet from the left. However, his delivery was lacking. Grabbed a goal late on but Newcastle need more from him now Anthony Gordon has gone.
Sean Neave - 5
A similar tale to Gateshead. Never stopped trying but failed to get a few half-chances away. Hit the bar early into the second half. A loan to pursue regular first-team football is needed.
Subs:
Alex Murphy - 5
Thrown into the action after Schar’s injury. Made a decent interception late on. Was let down by Botman.
Nick Pope - 5
Little he could do about the third goal. Should have probably saved the fourth.
Seung-soo Park - 5
A few eye-catching moves without any real penetration. Still very raw and will gain confidence in the under-21s this season.
