Much like when the sides met at St James’s Park in the Premier League, the match ended goalless with both teams struggling to create chances.
The game went straight to penalties where Nick Pope made three saves to see Newcastle through.

1. Nick Pope - 9
Made a good save to deny Mateta in the first half and remained calm and composed whenever called upon. Was the hero in the penalty shootout with an incredible three saves from five.
2. Javier Manquillo - 5
A fairly ineffective display down the right side. Struggled to link play up and his positioning was questionable at times. A fairly anonymous display.
3. Jamaal Lascelles - 7
Covered well to prevent Palace from getting in on goal in the second half. Won some important headers but his distribution from the back could have been sharper as he played several long balls forward straight to the Palace defence. A solid return to the side overall.
4. Dan Burn - 6
Had a tough task trying to contain Mateta but kept his composure before being withdrawn with the score at 0-0. Photo: Stu Forster
