Five changes as Matias Fernandez-Pardo starts: Newcastle United predicted XI v Millwall

Newcastle United predicted starting XI for their Carabao Cup third round match away to Championship side Millwall.

Newcastle United are in Carabao Cup action tonight as they travel to Championship side Millwall in the third round.

Matthias Jaissle is expected to make changes from the side that came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, with summer signings Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Toure among those hoping to earn a place in the starting line-up.

In goal, Jaissle has been handed a potential dilemma with Ewen Jaouen, as revealed by The Gazette, ruled out of the match whilst he seeks specialist advice on an ankle problem.

The Frenchman, who also missed the 2-2 draw at home to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, was signed by the Magpies in the summer as their cup goalkeeper. Now he is unavailable, Jaissle faces a decision on whether to stick with number one goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, or recall Nick Pope.

Pope, now the club’s third-choice goalkeeper, was made available for transfer in the summer but failed to secure a move. His inclusion on the bench against Bournemouth was the first time he has featured in a matchday squad under Jaissle.

Here’s how Newcastle United are predicted to line-up against Millwall:

GK: Lukas Hornicek

As revealed by The Gazette, Ewen Jaouen, who played in the second-round win over West Brom, will miss the game with an ankle issue. Nick Pope has now stepped up to second-choice goalkeeper, but does that mean he’ll start? Probably not.

RB: Amar Dedic

Tino Livramento made his return from injury as a late sub in the draw against Bournemouth on Saturday, but Matthias Jaissle confirmed after the game that the full-back isn’t yet fit to start, meaning Dedic is likely to continue.

CB: Malick Thiaw

Fabian Schar is waiting for an opportunity but Matthias Jaissle is yet to change his back four this season. It’ll likely be the same again at The Den, unless there are fitness issues we don’t know about.

CB: Sven Botman

Similar to Thiaw, Jaissle is unlikely to deviate from his preferred centre-back pairing.

LB: Lewis Hall

Livramento is still not fit enough to start, so there isn’t really an opportunity to rest Hall, even if the manager wanted to.

CM: Sean Steur (in for Nico Gonzalez)

Steur can count himself unlucky not to have started either of the last two Premier League matches. Made a difference after coming on at the weekend.

CM: Lewis Miley

It was on the hour-mark that Miley came off against Bournemouth after struggling to make an impact. Perhaps he’s a little fresher than the rest.

RW: Jacob Murphy (in for Anthony Elanga)

Jaissle fought to keep Murphy in the summer amid bids from Nottingham Forest. A chance to give the dressing room leader some game time.

LW: Bazoumana Toure (in for Harvey Barnes)

Toure started and scored in the last round against West Brom before coming off at half-time. Newcastle fans want to see more from their £42m summer recruit.

AM: Jacob Ramsey (in for Joe Willock)

Ramsey let slip after the Bournemouth game that he had been playing in training as a No.10, despite coming in a deeper role to score a late equaliser. Maybe this is when we’ll see it in a game.

ST: Matias Fernandez-Pardo (in for Yoane Wissa)

Toon supporters liked what they saw from the Belgian in the half-hour he played against Bournemouth and are eager to see him in for the start.
