Newcastle United have already banked £23.8m - and could receive extra £9.55m PSR boost within 7 days
Newcastle United latest news: Eddie Howe’s side have progressed to the Champions League knockout rounds.
Newcastle United secured their place in the Champions League knockout rounds with a 3-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Goals from Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes, the front three that was picked to start the game by Eddie Howe, secured their comfortable victory and ensured that, for the first time in the club’s history, they will play at least one two-legged Champions League knockout game.
Who their opponents will be and what round they will play them in are yet to be determined. The league phase of the Champions League concludes on Wednesday night with 18 games to kick-off simultaneously across Europe.
Newcastle United will head to Paris to face reigning European champions PSG at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night in possibly the hardest tie they could have been given to end their league phase campaign. However, Howe’s side know that a win in the French capital would see them finish in the top-eight and automatically qualify for the Round of 16.
By doing that, the Magpies will remove two games from their hectic fixture schedule - a priceless boost for their injury ravaged squad. Booking their place in the last 16 would also bring with it financial rewards that, as brought to light by the 2026 Deloitte Football Money League which was revealed on Thursday morning, will help them close the gap between themselves and the Premier League’s top clubs.
Champions League prize money & Newcastle United’s £10m PSR boost
Newcastle United’s journey in the Champions League this season has already earned them £23.8m in prize money. The Magpies received £16m just for qualifying for the competition and participating in the league phase.

Their four wins, over Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica, Athletic Club and PSV Eindhoven, has topped that up by an additional £7.2m. Their draw away at Bayer Leverkusen last month also added £600,000 to their coffers.
As you move up the league phase table, each place is also worth an additional £238,000 - giving every club an extra incentive to finish as high up the table as possible, even if it appears there is little to play for on the pitch.
Prize money then increases with every win in the knockout stage with an additional £9.55m for either finishing in the top-eight or winning a play-off round to secure safe passage into the Round of 16. £10.8m is available to quarter final winners with £13m available to semi-final winners.
A place in the final in Budapest on May 30 will guarantee any club just-shy of £16m with an additional £5.6m given to the winner.
Whilst dreams of a final in Budapest remain some way off, the Magpies know that victory in Paris on Wednesday night would guarantee them not just £1.8m in prize money, but also an additional lump for being in the Round of 16. If they do not leave the Parc des Princes as a top-eight finisher, then the Magpies will need to win a two-legged tie to bank that additional £9.55m in prize money.
