Newcastle United takeover and transfer news: Dwight Gayle new deal reported as double defender deal halted

Dwight Gayle is reportedly set to be offered a contract extension in order to prevent the Newcastle United striker leaving for nothing next summer.

The injured frontman’s current Magpies deal runs out in June and while his medium-term United future remains in doubt, even with a new contract, Newcastle are keen not to lose the player on a free, given that they were looking at getting around £15 million for the player just last summer.

Gayle played his way into manager Steve Bruce’s plans last season, with a four-goal Premier League offering post-lockdown. And, according to Football Insider, that appears to have swayed United’s decision-makers to start talks with the 29-year-old former Crystal Palace and Peterborough forward.

Meanwhile, various reports suggest Mikel Arteta has done a u-turn on the decision to allow Rob Holding to leave Arsenal, with the player now reportedly set to get a run in the Gunners’ Premier League opening schedule.

The former Bolton man appeared certain to join United on a season-long loan deal, but those plans now appear to have changed.

And, following the signing of Norwich City and Northern Ireland defender Jamal Lewis, United have ended their interest in Brazilian left-back Rogerio.

A deal was agreed with the Sassuolo player and a move looked on the cards, for around £12 million.

But, according to Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano, the defender is going nowhere.

He tweeted: “Rogerio will not join Newcastle from Sassuolo. The deal is now off - Jamal Lewis will be the only left back #NUFC will buy this transfer window.”
