Early Newcastle United team news vs Gateshead - two injuries, one doubt as £53m duo miss out

Newcastle United face Gateshead as supporters get the chance to see several summer signings in action.

Eddie Howe is expected to name a strong starting line-up as Newcastle United travel across the River Tyne to face Gateshead this afternoon.

The Magpies kick-started their Premier League preparations with a 3-0 behind-closed-doors friendly win over Darlington last weekend. But today presents Newcastle fans with their first chance to watch several new stars in action.

Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen both featured against Darlington a week ago. Bazoumana Toure is set to join up with the squad this morning after being given time off following the World Cup.

Stars unavailable

Likewise, new signing Aladji Bamba arrived yesterday and it remains to be seen whether the duo will play. A fresh look is expected regardless after Newcastle lost high-profile stars Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

The likes of Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes - linked with Arsenal - are also yet to return from the World Cup. On the injury front, Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley are not expected to take any part at the Gateshead International Stadium.

Newcastle United predicted XI

While this line-up is predicted, Nick Pope will likely start in goal. A lack of options at right-back could see Leo Shahar given a chance to shine, with Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman and Lewis Hall making up the back four.

The Gazette predicts a midfield of Jacob Ramsey, Steur and Joelinton. All eyes on the latter, who was left out a week ago as he is being eased back from a high injury.

Howe will likely start Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes and Will Osula as a three-pronged attack. Tickets are still available on Gateshead’s website for fans wishing to support the Magpies in action.
