Newcastle United transfer twist involving Nick Pope in final 48 hours of summer window
Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has been deemed surplus to requirements and could leave in the final days of the window.
Celtic are understood to remain interested in Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope.
The 34-year-old was not in the matchday squad for any of the opening three games this season. It is understood that Newcastle have actively been trying to find a potential suitor but his wages have proven an issue.
With just 48 hours of the window remaining, there is now a genuine possibility that Pope could move on. He previously told club insiders that he was happy to stay and fight for his place at St James’ Park.

Nick Pope situation
Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen have arrived and are challenging for the No.1 jersey. Until this summer, Pope had been the undisputed first-choice keeper since 2022 and was pivotal to two Champions League qualifications and the Carabao Cup success.
However, several high-profile errors over the last 12 months made the need for a new goalie a priority. Toon chiefs acted to bring two young shot-stoppers to the club - with Pope now deemed surplus to requirements.
Celtic interest
Celtic are thought to be considering a move for Pope - valued at £5million - following Kasper Schmeichel’s retirement. Vil Sinisalo became their No.1 goalie in March but a move for the Toon star appeals.
The Hoops have a track record of signing experienced Premier League goalkeepers in recent years. As well as Schmeichel, Joe Hart and Fraser Forster have also represented Celtic.
Ipswich Town - Pope’s boyhood club - had expressed interest in June. It is unclear whether the Tractor Boys are still keeping tabs on the situation.
Matthias Jaissle on Nick Pope
Speaking to reporters earlier this month, Jaissle revealed a conversation with Pope that suggests he will be allowed to move on. The German was complimentary of his previous achievements on Tyneside.
"I had a talk with Nick,” he said. “I really appreciate what he has done in his career so far. He knows exactly the situation right now and we need to deal with it in the best possible way, but I always appreciate the player and the human being behind."
