Newcastle United's new predicted final Premier League finish and European chances after bore draw at Wolves

The stats experts at Opta have updated their latest predicted final Premier League table - and it makes for interesting reading for Newcastle United.

Newcastle United wasted a golden opportunity to really thrust themselves towards the Champions League places as they laboured to a goalless draw at Premier League strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Eddie Howe’s side looked painfully short of creativity and ideas as they struggled to break down the side currently propping up the table after winning just one of their 22 league games and conceding 41 goals in the process. Newcastle took until the final 15 minutes to put their hosts under anything resembling persistent pressure and did not register a shot on target until the closing stages when captain Bruno Guimaraes brought a routine save out of Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

The point means United have lost just one of their last six league games - but it is hard not to shake the feeling the Magpies have missed out on a chance to head into a tricky run of fixtures on a positive note. Howe’s side will face the likes of Aston Villa, Liverpool, Brentford and Manchester City in the league over the next month and they will have to be at their best if they are to remain in contention for a second consecutive season in the Champions League.

But what are Newcastle’s chances of returning to European football’s top table and where are the Magpies predicted to finish in this season’s Premier League? We take a look at the latest predicted final table from the stats experts at Opta.
