Notable absentees as Newcastle United prepare to face Leeds United
Federico Fernandez is pushing for a recall to Newcastle United's starting XI at Elland Road.
Fernandez revealed over the weekend that he was back with the team after recovering from Covid-19, and the defender was pictured in training yesterday ahead of Wednesday night’s Premier League fixture against Leeds United.
Head coach Steve Bruce – who was without a “big chunk” of his squad at the weekend due to coroanvirus – revealed after Saturday’s 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion that he hoped to have a couple of players back.
Fernandez is likely to be named in the squad for Leeds, but Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser – who have been sidelined with calf and hamstring injuries respectively – were not in any photographs.
Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Javier Manquillo and Mark Gillespie also missed the West Brom game, which was decided by a late goal from Dwight Gayle. The club is 12th in the Premier League with 17 points.
