Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle could leave St James’s Park this month but he won’t be joining Leeds United.
That’s according to our sister paper the Yorkshire Evening Post, who say speculation linking the 29-year-old to Elland Road is “well wide of the mark”.
Gayle's future on Tyneside remains uncertain with the player understood to be open to leaving the club he joined in 2016 for £10million from Crystal Palace.
Championship duo West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest are said to be interested but his wages are proving a big stumbling block.
United would only be keen on a permanent transfer, rather than a loan.
Steve Bruce is happy to keep Gayle on Tyneside having previously spoken fondly about the player and his goal scoring attributes.
However, Bruce and co are yet to watch the former Peterborough United man find the back of the net this season in his eight appearances so far.
