PIF green light investment that will allow £200m Newcastle United training ground
Newcastle United are inching closer towards confirming a game-changing new training complex.
A game-changing investment that will clear the way for Newcastle United to build a £200million training ground is set to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Almost five years of Saudi-backed ownership has undoubtedly improved Newcastle’s fortunes. Under Mike Ashley, the Magpies stagnated, tumbling from the 13th-richest club in world football to 29th during his ownership.
If the “big six” dynamic existed at the time, Newcastle would very much be in the conversation. They were the fifth-most valuable Premier League asset in 2007 - ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

The Public Investment Fund arrived with ambition and, given their deep pockets, helped kick-start a new era on Tyneside. Newcastle’s fortunes transformed overnight - but not at the same levels of those who came previously.
Chelsea, Man City and Paris Saint-Germain were not bound by financial restriction during the early throes of their lottery-ticket-takeover journey. While PIF have invested, they are unable to propel the Magpies to global domination using monetary muscle alone.
Coupled with a distant ownership - Yasir Al-Rumayyan has never put himself in front of the local media - and Newcastle fans have questioned their ambition. For all the cries from familiar, top-brass figures like David Hopkinson about reaching the pinnacle by 2030, supporters want actions - not words - almost five years into the project.
A decision on St James’ Park’s future was promised in early 2025. It is almost midway through 2026 and supporters remain in the dark. This vacuum of information - while uncertainty regarding PIF’s future investments permeates throughout the media - adds to the sense of neglect.
However, the i report the biggest hint yet that PIF are committed is just weeks away from dropping. It is noted that the owners have green-lit funding to buy land for a £200million training complex - and the purchase should be seen in an upcoming Companies House update.
The Gazette understands Newcastle’s preferred location is Woolsington Hall. At present, the building and land - around 92 acres - is owned by former Toon supremo Sir John Hall.
The site’s location, situated near the airport and Darras Hall - where many players and staff live - is perfect for the training ground development. As well as renewing positivity, announcing a new base would prove a useful tool when attracting players to Tyneside.
For now, Newcastle will make do at Benton, with major improvements made to their home since the October 2021 takeover. A multi-year partnership with KNOX Hydration will see the base undergo a further revamp later this year.
