Premier League form table: Newcastle United's surprising placing over the last five games

Where do Newcastle United stand in the Premier League form table over the last five games?

Newcastle United’s last two Premier League results have been utterly disappointing, but they’ve still enjoyed a productive month.

The Magpies lost 2-0 at home to Aston Villa on Sunday following a lacklustre 0-0 draw away at bottom side Wolves a week prior, meaning it’s been just one point and zero goals scored across their last two games. But prior to that, Eddie Howe’s men won three straight matches against Burnley, Crystal Palace and Leeds United, netting nine goals along the way.

Littered between those matches have been FA Cup, EFL Cup and Champions League matches, no doubt influencing the energy levels that Newcastle have been able to bring to their Premier League commitments. With 10 points from five games since 30th December, Newcastle sit surprisingly high on the Premier League form table.

Despite the last two poor results, Newcastle top the form table over the last five games as the only side in the Premier League to hit double-figure points. And even though they’re goalless in their last two, the Magpies have only been outscored by Bournemouth (11) during this period, netting nine goals.

That three-game winning streak has seen Newcastle surge back into Champions League contention, sitting ninth in the table with 33 points, five adrift of the top four and just four behind Chelsea in fifth.

Manchester United are just below Newcastle in the form table and are the only unbeaten Premier League team across the last five games, drawing Ruben Amorim’s last two matches in charge before taking seven points from three since his departure. At the other end of the table, Newcastle can take great pleasure in seeing Sunderland 16th on the form table with just five points from their last five matches, while Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both occupy places in the bottom four.
