“For the good of the game it is refreshing to see Southampton at the top end and Everton. It is good for everyone involved.

“That is the beauty of the league we play in – it is not given for anyone.”

Bruce – whose side sit 11th on 11 points after seven games – was full of praise for the Saints ahead of the trip, as well as Austrian opposite number Hasenhuttl.

“They have had a remarkable 12 months - it was 12 months they lost heavily to Leicester. They have a very good side so it will be a tough place to go,” said Bruce.

“He is a very talented manager and he has been given time – which is something we all crave.

“In 2020 maybe only Man City and Liverpool have better results than them.

“There is no advantage at home, or disadvantage away. We may as well play on a training ground.

“We have done OK on the road, we are unbeaten on our travels, let's hope we can get another result.

“(Everton win) It gives that little bit of confidence. Sometimes it is the manner in which we play. I hope the supporters enjoyed it.”
