The Magpies have been beset by a number of high-profile absences over the course of the campaign, and are currently having to contend with the small matter of top scorer Callum Wilson and key creative duo Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron all being ruled until next month at the earliest.

When asked by William Hill who he thought had been the most unfortunate side in the top flight this term, Savage replied: “The one I’m going to go with is Newcastle United and Steve Bruce

"They lost the goalkeeper for 14 games, the captain Lascelles missed 11 games, Saint-Maximin missed 10. Now they’ve got Wilson out, Almiron out, Saint-Maximin’s out.

"How many defenders have they lost throughout the course of the season.

"So for me, Steve Bruce has been very unfortunate with the injury situation. People will say that they’re not good enough, they don’t play expansive football, I know all the stats. But I think in terms of injuries, Steve Bruce has been the most unfortunate manager.

"The manager will always be accountable for results. The results haven’t been good enough. Can they stay up? Yes, I think they will, just, but it’s going to be very very tight.

"The three players, you know, Fraser had an injury as well throughout the course of the season. The players in attacking areas as well – Gayle’s been injured.

"So, I say that he’s been very unfortunate.”
