Tonali is under investigation for alleged illegal betting activity with fresh reports from Italy suggesting prosecutors are close to a verdict. Sky Sports have echoed the claims that the 23-year-old could be facing a 10-month ban from football, which could be announced before Wednesday’s match (8pm kick-off).

The midfielder came off the bench to a warm reception in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park. Tonali is still eligible to play matches for Newcastle before a verdict is reached.

But UEFA are understood to be against any player being involved in a Champions League match while under investigation for alleged betting offences.

But Tonali has continued as normal under the circumstances with Howe involving the player in the pre-match preparations at Darsley Park.

Speaking after Saturday’s match, Howe thanked supporters for getting behind Tonali during an uncertain and difficult period.

“A big thank you from me to our supporters,” Howe said. “That reception at the end today was incredible and it was emotional.

“He’s going through an incredibly emotional time and the supporters reacted how I hoped they would. I could feel the love between him and them and that will do him the world of good, he’ll feel much better.

“We don’t know what’s ahead for him but a big thank you from me to them.”

Howe will provide a further update on Tonali’s situation at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
